I am a quilter living in Woodbridge, Suffolk who has made quilts since I was a teenager. I also ring bells! Both are great British traditions....I will try to feature some of my antique Welsh and Durham quilts, the quilts I make myself, my quilting activities and also some of my bellringing achievements. Plus as many photos as I can manage. NB: Double click on the photos to see greater detail, then use back button to return to the main page.

Surprise Discovery

On Saturday, I was teaching Hand Quilting and Torn and Woven Quilts at Quilters Haven. I happened to spot this fabric....

It is "Faded Red" a Rouenerries fabric by Moda - it is a very near match to the fabric in the Northumberland stamped top - it is the right color and also has the red and white threads...

....You can see how close a match it is to the original, which I didn't think was possible! The only drawback is, it is a linen and cotton mix and is a heavier weight than the Kona cotton. I bought 1/2 metre - I will wash it (in case there is a dressing) and then make up a sample piece to see how it sews and quilts. If all goes well I will go back and buy more - the pink Kona cotton will be saved for another project (it would make a good quilt backing for a wholecloth).

...first signs of spring in the garden, some lavender crocuses...

I thought you might be amused to see this, it recently won a contest for Best Pub sign...the Vulcan Arms in Sizewell. Sizewell is a small fishing village that has a pub - and two nuclear power stations. We went for a walk there yesterday, along the beach to Minsmere and back. We got lost and ended up walking much further than intended...Vulcan of course is a Roman god, there is also a bomber of the same name ....and Mr. Spock.....very amusing to this girl of a certain age.

  1. I've got something similar to the pink in my stash - a red and white thread chambray, not quite as fine as the Kona cotton, but probably finer than the Rouenniere's fabric you've found. I think I got it from The Shuttle at one of the shows. Would it be any good for your project? I think it is wider than regular quilt cotton and I bought at least 2 yards I think.

  2. Thanks for your very kind offer, Susan, I am going to make up a sample tomorrow morning and I'll let you know how I got on...washed cloth but it did fray a lot (linen warp threads). Pippa

  3. If the red chambray would be any use, just let me know. I haven't washed it so don't know how it would behave, but probably better than the linen/cotton blend. There again, you'll be quilting it quite densely so maybe it would be OK.

The chambray was acquired for my recent red and white quilt (pics on my blog) for the setting triangles but I ended up using a red on white mini polka dot instead.

  4. Might have to take you up on this!! I sewed a sample with three half square triangles and plus plain patches- it made up alright - but the linen/cotton was very coarse - it was difficult to mark and now, quilting, I have to quilt with bigger stitches - will finish it off but definately having second thoughts now...Pippa

  5. I can't promise it will be any easier to mark - I was going to resort to blue washout pen (though I guess you could go mroe traditional and opt for blue crayon a la Allendale stampers!)
