Remember, washing is irreversible….you can’t “ unwet” a quilt! So assess it first, fragile quilts or fabrics liable to bleed should not be washed. Luckily, these Durham and Welsh wholecloths are very sturdy and have probably been washed many times before.

First, lukewarm water in the bathtub with a small amount of a special detergent like Synthrapol or Metaplex. It was made by Mrs Herbert, pub landlady from Todhills, Byers Green, Bishop Aukland in Co. Durham. This was given to the sellers grandmother Ruth of Sleights House Farm as a wedding present by her mother in law Mrs Herbert. In 1973 it was then given in turn to her daughter in law Jennie Wearmouth of Hunwich, Bishop Aukland when Jennie was pregnant with her first child. Through all this time, the bed jacket was kept safely in a box, so has never been worn.

The bed jacket is fully reversible. the front has daisies and twists, with a running feather up the sleeves.

The collar has a twist, and the back has a rose surrounded by two feathers. Liz Nally has a similar bed jacket from another maker living nearby, and once Covid is over, it will be interesting to compare the two to see if there was a locally used pattern.

Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-8751033502391041432020-10-10T09:18:00.000+01:002020-10-10T09:18:24.172+01:00Hawaiian Quilts on the Go

I enjoy making Hawaiian quilts, but the appliqué is more enjoyable than the quilting! I have had a lot of time at home during lockdown, keeping safe and observing social distancing. Luckily, Suffolk has not been so badly affected as other areas. It is still a very unsettling time. Our holiday had to be postponed and I have not been able to go to the Guild in York to hand over the quilts that I am donating to them.

Well, I have been busy during lockdown, as I am still working online from home with cloud accounts.

I have also been clearing the garden, which has been much neglected. As the rubbish tips are closed just now, there is a huge heap of plant material in one corner of the yard.

Here is the mariners compass - it was sent off to Daisy May Quilting in Martlesham Heath. I chose a paisley quilting pattern to match the vintage and modern paisley fabrics. I also added a red paisley binding. I am pleased with the way this turned out. I originally was hand piecing it, but reverted to machine piecing. I used Ruth McDowell's piecing methods, whereby you sew on the marked seam line, and match registration marks, this method works well for me.

I found this pattern to be sufficiently challenging as well as very attractive, and during lockdown decided to make a second quilt using a different colour scheme (all fabrics already in my stash). This time the top was entirely machine pieced. The quilting design I chose was Tiki, which is a triangular spiral design. Again, I was pleased with this quilt.

During lockdown I have been trying to prepare quilts as much as possible, as I don't have very much free time when I am working. So I have cut out and basted two Hawaiian quilts. This one is Kunawai. The most difficult part is arranging it carefully on the background fabric after cutting out.

I also prepared this pattern - Ulu, a pattern by Elizabeth Akana. For the first time, I "posterized" the design to make it the size I wanted. It was a learning curve, and next time I would change it to a light grey colour, as with black the print cartridge was used up at a fantastic rate. Or, choose an outline! But it worked...

I was able to cut the pattern out and baste.. I will mark the complicated parts once I have located my Sewline pen, which seems to be hiding...or may have to order a new one, as I seem to have plenty of lead refills but no pen....
I am still quilting - Kiku Nut is almost finished, and I basted and started to quilt the orange and purple quilt Umeke O Kamehameha. Of course, no Festival of Quilts this year, so no urgency to get them finished!Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-85425898736446217052020-04-01T18:17:00.001+01:002020-04-01T18:18:27.032+01:00New Projects - March 2020

I have several projects on the go - it looks as if there will be plenty of time to work on these, due to the current lockdown.

The colours here are a bright orange and a mid purple. The top is complete and now for basting and quilting. I am currently almost finished hand quilting the green and white kiku nut, although it looks as if there will not be a Festival of Quilts this year, as part of the NEC is being turned into an emergency hospital.

This mariners compass has been completed and has gone off to Val at Daisy May, for long arm quilting. I enjoyed making this, but had to laugh. The instructions said that once cut out, it went together easily. Of course not true. I used the Ruth McDowell method of marking seam lines, registration marks and pinning carefully. More exact than quarter inch seams.
This is a Welsh quilt made in Aberythsweth by Mrs Annie Davies who lived above a drapers shop in Chalybeate Street. The quilt was bought from Jen Jones, who has another quilt by Annie.

Jen asked to borrow this quilt for this years show at her museum in Lampeter. The intention is to do further research about the drapers shop at archives in Aberythsweth, and to hang the two quilts over a re-created drapers shop. It should look stunning.

The quilt has been posted off and received by Jen, I only hope that the current lockdown does not delay the exhibition too much. I am really hoping to see this exhibition!Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-4798392251841545082020-03-15T16:44:00.000+00:002020-07-03T14:37:30.076+01:00Lilac and White Sanderson Star Quilt

Here is a recent purchase. I have a special interest in this pattern, the Sanderson Star, so was pleased to acquire this quilt at a reasonable price.

The quilting patterns are rather simple compared to the earlier quilts, so may be a later quilt. The designs seem to have been stamped, or marked by a quilt designer, but are simplified. For example, in the star there are the usual rose and fern, but not as detailed as earlier quilts.

It is also not square. Beds changed shape during the 20th century, and quilts became rectangular in shape to fit the new-sized beds. In this pattern, which was very popular, the centre stayed the same but the borders in one direction were enlarged to create a rectangular quilt. When I get a chance to measure, I will confirm this.

The quilt came from an established dealer in the North East who has her own collection of quilts. No further information on this quilt.Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-10626658002834460962019-12-10T08:29:00.001+00:002019-12-10T08:29:31.860+00:00Quilted Cushion from Durham

Here is a strippy quilt from Milfield, Sunderland. One side is a patterned cotton sateen, and the other side is a pink and white strippy. I was attracted to this because of the superior quilting, this probably indicates that it is an earlier example, as the later quilts are much more simply quilted.

The strippy side of the quilt shows various patterns including feathers, bellows and a plait.

Although the stitches are not overly small, the quilting is dense, giving a lovely texture. The quilt is in good condition, with little wear, although there are some minor stains. Not bad for a quilt over 100 years old!

The seller said that this quilt came from her aunts house, who always had pretty things in her house.

She did not know whether Auntie had made this - I suspect not, this looks like the product of a local quilter, as it is so well made and not a "one off". Sunderland seems to have had a lot of quilters.

The Archives held at The Craft Study Centre include the archives of Muriel Rose and The Little Shop. It was interesting to look at the receipt book - prices were high for that time and customers seemed mainly the aristocracy. There was also a complete copy of the catalogue - this proved what I has always thought, that Margaret Williams was a RIB quilter from Wales. Here is the page showing one of her characteristic quilts. One of the cushions also looks to be her work.Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-35423295392704291892019-11-20T12:53:00.001+00:002019-11-20T13:14:53.979+00:00Signature Quilt 1893 Greengates Sunday School

Here is a quilt that is in very poor condition! It was probably made as a fund raiser. The winner of the raffle obviously used it - the corners and edges are worn. However, the interest is that the squares and setting triangles all have embroidered names which could be used in a research project.

The quilt has a central panel which states "Greengates Sunday School Christmas 1893".

The red and white squares all have a name embroidered on them. It looks as if the names were signed in ink and then embroidered, as there are a variety of handwriting styles. The embroidery has a lot of variety as well, a few not so well done, the rest nicely done in stem stitich, chain stitch and back stitch.

That is a cat's tail there! The squares are set diagonally, with setting triangles at the edge. The quilting is by hand.

It is a large quilt at 100 x 80 inches, and you can see the wear clearly in this photo. The quilt is in a rather tattered state.

The signatures usually have a first and a last name, rather than the initials sometimes found on these quilts - a real bonus for anyone doing research.

Corners usually receive a lot of wear, as with this corner. The wadding is of cotton. The binding has been sewn on by machine. The backing is a white cotton and has been taken to the front to make the binding.

You can see how the triangles also contain names. Family groups can be seen.

I did a bit of inital research online - it seems likely that this church was in Bradford, Yorkshire. The church is redundant now, and closed, but there are items about the war memorial on the internet.
This quilt was bought online for £120 - it had previously been bought for £450 ten years previously, at a craft fair in Cambridgeshire.

There is a "Signature Research Group" associated with BQSG. Anne Jeather researched another fundrasing quilt, from a Primitive Baptist church. There are Baptist archives which can be consulted. But most of the research was done online using ancestry websites. Another project for the retirement (when that finally comes in 3 or 4 years!!)

I was offered the chance to buy some more cushions by Amy Emms. These came from a seller in the Borders, near Hawick. The sellers mother had these made by Amy, who was often to be seen at craft fairs in the area.

Many of the cushions made by Amy have feather wreaths. These three are similar, but not identical.....this one had feathers plus corner motifs....

This one is very similar to the first...

...but this one has feathers only and no longer has its pad. The backs of all have larger crosshatching, there is no frill and no label. The colour is an old gold colour in "art silk".

The three cushions came as a group, but I did not need duplicates. So one has gone off to Norfolk, the other off to Sheffield, where I am sure they will be admired, and used as teaching aids.Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-14303450240528073642019-10-22T16:02:00.001+01:002019-10-22T16:02:09.630+01:00Two Amy Emms cushions

Here are two cushions that I recently "won" on that online auction site. The seller was a lady from Carlisle, who had known Amy Emms well . She was selling a number of cushions as her children were not interested; however she still owns three quilts made by Amy.

Here is a cushion with a rose and a feather circle. Fans are in the corners. This seems to have been Amy's most usual pattern. Notice the very even quilting stitches!
Both of the cushions have Amy's label. I have other Amy Emm's cushions that are earlier, and lack this label.

There were other cushions for sale, but of course you can't bid on them all, for fear that you would then have to pay for too many items, if you won them. So I just put in two bids.....

I never met Amy, but have heard a lot about her from Lilian Headley and others. Most of us also have a copy of Amy's book, which is well worth a read,Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-68711638818038557782019-10-07T15:33:00.001+01:002019-10-11T12:03:38.265+01:00Current projects Sept 2019

I bought this pattern (downloadable) as I wanted to use some ombre strips that I had bought.

Pre cut strips are 2 1/2" wide. However, when I bought the pattern, it wanted you to cut the strips to 2 1/4 inches - I wondered if it were possible to enlarge the shapes to fit onto a 2 1/2" strip - I found that I could just squeeze the larger shapes onto a 2 1/2" strip. I guess the designer thought that this wasn't a good idea for most sewers and thus adjusted the sizes to the smaller width, which easily accomodated the shapes. So - my blocks are larger than those in the pattern.

The Rainbow Rails quilt top was longarm quilted by Val H. at Daisy May, in a swirl pattern that I picked out. I wanted to try a binding with piping as demonstrated by Philippa Naylor, and it wasn't that difficult although I am not sure that I would do this again...
A pair of muntjac deer have taken up residence in my backyard, and are busily eating everything in sight. Still, they are interesting to watch in the evenings. I am getting annoyed when they eat the plants in my planters, however!

The Festival of quilts 2019 - once again, we stayed in Solihull and just went for the weekend. This is more than enough for me! as four days was just too much, too exhausting. It is a very big show, and the best place to buy things that are specialised...

My red and white Hawaiian had arrived safely. I had to work very hard to complete the quilting, binding and sleeve in time. Next year - I must complete the quilt in good time!
Another Hawaiian from a Japanese entry. Two ladies agreed that they liked this one better than mine. It is more colorful - but not strictly traditional....quilting was good on this one...

I was especially interested to see Christopher Tate Wilson's trunk show. He advertises heavily on social media and I have heard so much about him from the other dealers. He is the "wide boy" of the quilt world. Most of the quilts go abroad to collectors and do not stay here in the UK, I guess this has long been the case...
I don't watch any of the TV selling stations - but I did watch Susan Briscoe giving her broadcast for a while. Karin Hellaby also appeared and received a lot of attention afterwards. I dont often watch videos or Utube, as I am not a visual person: I like to have written instructions that I can return to quickly. But I have been buying a few downloadable .pdf patterns recently....more later.Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1738660161076439950.post-6409016963581701702019-09-23T15:26:00.000+01:002019-09-23T15:26:44.875+01:00Vintage Sewing Machines

I have a small collection of vintage sewing machines. When I retire, I will be able to clean and restore these machines. Unlike modern machines with their plastic innards and computerised boards, the vintage machines are all metal and highly engineered. If cleaned and lubricated, most will give many years of sewing. And it is possible to rewire them if necessary. Here are two that I bought inexpensively recently.

A 201 Singer. This is the type of machine that I learned to sew on. Of course, Mother's Singer was in a lovely wooden cabinet and had a matching chair. This little machine weighs a ton and is definitely not portable. It is even a job to get it from floor to table! Still, it will happily sew through heavy materials like denim, canvas and leather.

At the moment, I am only interested in the electric models, although the hand crank models are abundant here in the UK. I do have a treadle singer bought from the estate of one of the old Ipswich bellringers who worked with leather. I also support a charity, Tools with a Mission, based in Ipswich which sends tools including sewing and knitting machines to Africa, where they can be life changing.
Training and the gift of a vintage sewing machine allows a person to earn money and keep their family. These quilts were made as church fund raisers and there is an interesting article about them in Quilt Studies. As group quilts, they are not especially well made, the stitches are rather large as are the motifs. Still they are rather charming!Pippa Moss - Welsh Quiltshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12102958156763153144noreply@blogger.com0
